Installation of a new sidewalk on the east side of Brentwood Drive in Palisade is scheduled to be completed by the end of the first week of September, Frank Watt, public works director, reported on Aug. 12.

The 5 ½ foot wide sidewalk is intended to provide a safer route for pedestrians, especially residents of The Retreat residence and students who attend Taylor Elementary School on the west side of Brentwood.

In the past, pedestrians walked on the dirt and gravel next to the road or sometimes walked in the road.  Also, a number of Retreat residents rode their electric wheelchairs on the street to reach stores at the corner with 8th Street.

Asked on Aug. 12 to comment about crews at work digging a path for the sidewalk, Mike Wilson, a resident of The Retreat, said, “It’s good to see they’ve started.”  Wilson and a number of residents at The Retreat use wheelchairs or walk along Brentwood or on the street.  Wilson said in an interview on July 23 that the sidewalk should have been there 20 years ago.

The new sidewalk will have graded ramps for wheelchairs and strollers.  The new sidewalk will be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.

Public Works Director Watt said the cost of the project is approximately $72,000.
